While this feature will affect fewer people in terms of audience than macOS support, it still shows that Ryujinx is a step ahead of the competition when it comes to cool features.Īs both Ryujinx and Yuzu support more and more games, it is becoming clear that the differentiation will come through additional features such as more platform support and this new LDN3 version. This new version allows Ryujinx players to connect and play with real Nintendo Switch devices (with CFW) on a local network. What used to be limited to “people just running the emulator” now opens up to “local network with switch owners” for Ryujinx with version 3 of their LDN (Local Wireless) service. However, with a combination of wins and obstacles, Ryujinx managed to bring its emulator to the Apple platform, a big step towards more users for this Switch emulator.
The same cannot be said about the GPU hardware, however, as Mac’s infamous “Metal” API seems to be limited and difficult to use. Both run on ARM base, the Ryujinx developers claim that this helps tremendously in some steps of the emulator, basically without requiring emulation at all in some critical steps where the Mac chipsets simply use the exact same commands as the Switch can run. Not only have they brought compatibility to this platform, they also seem to take advantage of the CPU similarities between Apple silicon and the Switch. The obvious first: Ryujinx is now macOS compatible, making it the only decent Switch emulator on that platform to my knowledge (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m the Jon Snow of macOS!)
But with their recent releases, Ryujinx has definitely taken the lead, at least for some users. When it comes to Nintendo Switch emulation, Ryujinx and Yuzu are both good choices, and it’s often a matter of personal preference which one you use (I’m Yuzu, personally).
